Welcome

The Inner Bean Project ™

The Inner Bean Project™ is a movement that brings together art, neuroscience, and cultural heritage to nurture emotional well-being.

At its center is the Lima bean, an ancient seed that has carried stories of resilience for generations. Today, it serves as a gentle messenger — a reminder that healing is not about perfection, but about honoring our journeys with courage and care.

ABOUT

Our Project

A global movement celebrating good mental health, emotional awareness, and self-kindness through art and transformative science.

At the heart of our project is a humble yet powerful symbol: the Peruvian pallar (lima bean), soft and curved, shaped like the brain’s emotional center. This bean is much more than a dietary staple—its design embodies layers of profound meaning inspired by ancient Moche culture. For the Moche, the bean transcended nourishment to represent the cyclical dance of life and death as well as transformation. Its symbolism is rooted in three key aspects:

  • Life and Renewal: Emblematic of regeneration, the bean celebrated the continuous flow of life and the promise of new beginnings.
  • Death and Transition: Acting as a visual metaphor, the bean marked the necessary transition from one state of being to another—guiding souls from life into the spiritual realm.
  • Transformation: In depictions of warrior sacrifice and rebirth, the bean encapsulated the transformative power that arises through struggle and change.

Enhancing this rich symbolism, our modern reinterpretation of the bean features three tactile dots. These dots invite you to connect with the core messages of self-compassion:

  • The first dot whispers, "I am okay."
  • The second reassures, "I am safe."
  • The third affirms, "I am loved."

STORY

A Symbol of Healing You Can Hold

The Inner Bean Project began with a simple yet profound question: What if healing could start with something you could hold in your hand? This question led to the creation of a handcrafted lima bean pin—coated in acrylic, gold leaf, and resin, and adorned with three hand-painted dots that symbolized affirmations: "I am okay," "I am safe," "I am loved." This small object serves as a kind of tactile anchor, offering a moment of grounding and self-compassion.

Roots in Art, Neuroscience & Empathy

The project was conceived by a designer and artist whose academic work focused on sensory integration and emotional regulation, particularly for individuals on the autism spectrum. Drawing from these areas, the Inner Bean was designed to be a simple, portable tool that encourages mindfulness and emotional awareness.

Cultural Continuity from Ancient Peru

Each bean is ethically sourced from Peru, honoring the ancient Moche culture (1–600 CE), where painted lima beans were used as symbolic messengers carried between villages. This tradition of using small, meaningful objects for communication and connection inspired the Inner Bean Project, bridging ancient cultural practices with contemporary emotional care.

Why It Matters

  • Science-informed design: Combines tactile grounding with affirmations to support emotional regulation.
  • Cultural heritage: Bridges contemporary well-being with ancient Peruvian symbolism.
  • Everyday tool: A discreet, wearable pin that encourages mindfulness and presence.

Healing begins when beauty catches your attention.

What began as a personal practice has blossomed into a movement—connecting trauma centers, therapy spaces, judicial buildings, and national institutions. Each bean-pin carries a moment of presence, compassion, and emotional care into unexpected spaces.

The Inner Intention

A project rooted in compassion, healing, and meaningful change.

Mission

The Inner Bean Project is dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and nurturing self-kindness through the healing power of art and neuroscience.

Rooted in the symbolic shape of the Peruvian Lima Bean—soft and curved like the brain’s emotional center—we invite people to reconnect with their inner world through creativity, storytelling, and science made simple. By blending visual language with emotional education, we help individuals, understand their feelings, comfort their inner selves, and build resilience with compassion.

Vision

Our vision is to become the universal symbol for mental health and kindness.

We imagine a world where emotional well-being is understood, supported, and celebrated. Where the inner bean becomes a shared symbol—reminding people everywhere that healing begins with kindness, and that caring for the mind is an act of courage, not weakness.

Why It Works?

Tactile grounding

Handling an object refocuses attention away from emotional overwhelm and toward the senses

Affirmations + breath

Pairing self-soothing statements with mindful breathing helps regulate nervous-system arousal and builds emotional resilience.

Portable practice

No special knowledge or setting required—you can use the bean anywhere, anytime stress or anxiety arises.
